How to View SSL Certificate Details in Browsers

This guide explains how to inspect the SSL/TLS certificate of a website. Viewing a certificate allows you to verify the site's identity, check the issuing authority (CA), and confirm the expiration date.

Note: Many browsers have recently moved these details away from the "Padlock" icon to specialized menus to declutter the interface.

1. Google Chrome

Desktop (Windows / macOS / Linux)

Chrome has moved certificate details inside the "Tune" or "Site Info" menu.

  1. Navigate to the website.

  2. Click the "Tune" icon (two slider switches) or the Lock icon located to the immediate left of the URL address bar.

  3. Click Connection is secure.

  4. Click Certificate is valid.

  5. A pop-up window will appear displaying the certificate details (Issued To, Issued By, and Validity Period).

Mobile (Android)

  1. Open Chrome and visit the website.

  2. Tap the Lock icon or Tune icon to the left of the address bar.

  3. Tap Connection is secure.

  4. Tap Certificate information.

  5. You can now view the validity dates and issuer.

Mobile (iOS - iPhone/iPad)

Limitation Note: Chrome on iOS does not currently support viewing detailed SSL certificate technical data (like the SHA fingerprints or full hierarchy) natively. To view these on an iPhone, use Safari (instructions below).

2. Apple Safari

macOS (Safari 18.4 and newer)

Significant Change: In recent versions of Safari, clicking the lock icon no longer shows the certificate immediately.

  1. Navigate to the website.

  2. Click Safari in the top menu bar (system menu).

  3. Select Connection Security Details...

  4. Click Show Certificate in the pop-up to view the full hierarchy and trust settings.

macOS (Older versions)

  1. Click the Lock icon in the address bar.

  2. Select Show Certificate.

Mobile (iOS 18+ - iPhone/iPad)

  1. Open Safari and visit the website.

  2. Tap the Page Menu icon (displayed as AA or an ellipsis on the left of the address bar).

  3. Select Connection Security Details.

  4. Tap Show Certificate to view validity and issuer.

3. Mozilla Firefox

Desktop (Windows / macOS)

Firefox retains one of the most detailed certificate viewers.

  1. Click the Lock icon in the address bar.

  2. Click Connection secure.

  3. Click More information.

  4. A "Page Info" window will open. Click the View Certificate button on the right side.

    • Pro Tip: This opens a new tab with deep technical details, including the PEM (downloadable) chain.

4. Microsoft Edge

Desktop (Windows / macOS)

  1. Click the Lock icon in the address bar.

  2. Click Connection is secure.

  3. Click the Certificate icon (a small diploma/document symbol) located at the top-right of the small flyout menu.

  4. The Windows System Certificate Viewer will open with the details.
