CloudFlare - Transfer Domain Registration

Moving Your Domain to Cloudflare, Made Easy

Think of transferring a domain like moving your phone number to a new carrier. You need to prepare things with your old provider before you can switch to the new one. Here’s how to do it in three main parts.

Part 1: Prepare Your Domain at Your Old Provider

Before starting the transfer on Cloudflare, you need to log in to the account where your domain is currently registered (like GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.) and do three things:

  1. Turn Off the Transfer Lock 🔒 Your domain has a security setting called a registrar lock or domain lock. This prevents anyone from transferring your domain without permission. You need to find this setting and turn it off.

  2. Get Your Authorization Code 🔑 You need a special password to prove you own the domain. This is often called an auth code or transfer code. Find the option to request this code from your current provider. Keep it handy—you'll need it for Cloudflare.

  3. Disable WHOIS Privacy (If Necessary) 🕵️ If you use a service that hides your personal contact information (like your name and address) on the public domain registry, you may need to turn it off temporarily. Some providers won't allow a transfer with it enabled.

Part 2: Start the Transfer on Cloudflare

Once you've prepared your domain, it's time to tell Cloudflare you want to move it.

  1. Choose the Domain to Transfer Log in to Cloudflare, go to Transfer Domains, and select the domain you want to move. At this stage, you'll see the price. Transferring a domain requires you to pay to add one more year to its registration.

  2. Enter Your Authorization Code This is where you'll use the special password you got from your old provider. Type in the auth code to prove the transfer is legitimate.

  3. Confirm Your Contact Information Enter your name, address, and other contact details. Cloudflare is required to collect this for registration purposes but will keep it private. Make sure this information is accurate.

Part 3: Approve and Wait

You're almost done! The final step is to give the final green light.

  1. Approve the Transfer via Email ✅ You will receive an email from your old provider to confirm you want to leave. Open this email and click the approval link. This will speed up the process significantly. If you don't click it, the transfer will still happen, but it could take up to five days.

  2. Check the Status You can watch the transfer's progress in your Cloudflare account. It will show as "In Progress" and then "Pending Approval" until it's complete.

After the Transfer is Done

Once your domain is with Cloudflare, it's a good idea to double-check your DNS records. These are the settings that point your domain to your website and email service. Cloudflare tries to copy them automatically, but it's always smart to make sure everything is pointing to the right place to avoid any downtime.
